Do you ever wake up and think about dinner?! No seriously, forget about what you’re eating for breakfast, skip past lunch, and just think “wow! what am I making the kids for dinner?” Yep, i said the kids, the children, the bambinos...etc. After a long day of work, hearing the children debating over what’s for dinner is the last thing you probably want to do. Well, at least it is for me. Now when I said forget about breakfast I didn’t really mean forget about breakfast-that’s the most important meal of the day! We will talk about quick breakfast ideas soon! Back to this dinner debate, or the lack of one, once I tell you about this little system I have going on in my household. Considering I have to cook for 7, sometimes 12 people, you can maybe understand why cooking can be a bit stressful! No worries, I developed a system that involves my childrenand leaves them anxious for dinner! It works for my house, maybe it will work for yours... I’m a mom of 5, but I also have two bonus children, that I care for and treat as my own . Each kid, with different personalities that come with some pretty picky palates; or different taste buds. Their taste receptors are well developed, I urge them to try different foods, and tell me what they would change in the recipe. Because I was never a huge fan of eating vegetables, my children turn their noses at every taste testing opportunity. Has your pediatrician recommended to you kids to “eat the rainbow”, a fundamental health tip. A reminder to eat a variety of colors in fruits and vegetables. My kids liked the idea of the rainbow and that is about it lol Okay so every Saturday evening we like to come up with a menu for the week! I found a cute, chalkboard menu board at Target for $5 some years ago. You don’t need one, but it helps a great deal for the kids to see what’s expected during the week like their school lunch menu. My kids prefer school lunch (bleh) over bringing lunch -I pick and choose battles lol To prepare for the actual menu I had each of the children tell me 5 of their favorite meals and I wrote them down on popsicle sticks. Then we place them in a mason jar, and I added my mommy meals into the bunch. So on Saturday I pick 5 popsicle sticks for the evenings we eat home. Sunday through Thursday. Friday’s the kids are expected to eat leftovers from the week. Now to be honest it doesn’t always work out that way, lol they prefer not to eat leftovers they have been spoiled to hot fresh cooked food. So daddy, usually takes them out to eat or grab carry out or a pizza. Saturday’s we definitely eat out somewhere, the children usually have a basketball or football game or a cheer competition, so we are on the go most of the day and get home late. After the popsicle sticks are chosen we take our bright wonderful chalk markers and write down the chosen meals in order that they have been picked. I still get some pouting lips and waterworks but for the most part it’s fair and it works for me. The crocodile tears don’t last longer than 5mins 😩😬
On Sunday, I go grocery shopping for the meals and prep for the week. I’ve been doing pretty well with this, the kids like being involved and if it’s their meal they want to help prepare and even assist in cooking. I’m still working on getting my kids too eat more veggies, any ideas or tips are welcomed! How do you prepare for dinner at your house for the week?
